F.A.Q

What is the difference in methods?
TCM (a.ka. Traditional Method, Traditional Chinese Medicine Method, or TCM) It is the oldest method and follows with the TCM principles and specific needs of the postpartum period. (to balance the yin or cooling process of birth with the yang or warmth of the placenta) This method involves gently steaming the placenta with fresh/organic lemon, ginger and pepper and dehydrating at 125 degrees.

Gentle - Similar to the TCM method, but without any additions (i.e. no lemon/ginger/pepper) - this is recommended for a frozen placenta.

Balanced Yield - Similar to High Yield except the placenta is dehydrated at 160 degrees (USDA safety recommendations for dehydrating meat) At this temperature, bacteria and active enzymes are destroyed. It is believed that essential hormones are retained and the iron content is made more bio-available using either Balanced or Raw Method.
(This is the most commonly requested method)
How many capsules will I get?
The yield varies depending on method of preparation and size of placenta. Typically the placenta weights between 1/4 and 1/5 of the baby's birth weight, and yields between 120-160 capsules
What is The Tincture?
Placenta Tinctures (or placenta remedy) are mainly meant for energy, transition, stress, and hormone stabilization. They are great for periods of transition such as: returning menstrual cycles, menopause, and even puberty. It can also benefit others of the maternal line including the biological mother and daughter(s).  It may also be given to a baby older than 6 months for teething relief, to help support immune function and during times of transition or stress. The tincture is made from a quarter size piece of your raw placenta and 100 proof vodka, which must be aged for 6 weeks postpartum before initial use. The tincture has an almost indefinite shelf life if stored correctly.
Who does Pick up and Drop off?
We do! As your doulas we will depart with your placenta and begin processing it within 24 hours. Once completed (typically within 24-48 hrs), we will return the capsules to you (typically at the first postpartum visit unless otherwise indicated). This leaves your free to focus on the important things, like your newest family member!

Traditional Benkung
Belly Binding

Binding the stomach offers support, stability and comfort to the muscles, skin and internal organs to repair and bring healing to the postpartum body. During pregnancy, the vertical abdominal muscles widen and thin to accommodate growing babies, which can result in diastasis recti. This is a condition where the muscles separate and may stay separate (if not properly cared for), creating back issues, hernias and bulging of the abdomen. Binding is a terrific way to heal the muscle walls back together and also support spine and posture realignment. Binding is considered very emotionally healing for postpartum mothers. Traditionally belly binding is done daily for 6 weeks postpartum starting on day 3-4 after birth. It is at it's most effective and best used during the first 8 weeks postpartum, but can also be useful for support during anytime of the postpartum period.
Other benefits include:
  • Helps uterus return to pre-pregnancy size
  • Improves posture and spinal alignment
  • Alleviates back ache
  • Provides some  self-care for new parent
  • May help stabilizes loose ligaments
  • Providing additional pressure to abdomen to help reduce water retention
  • Gently allows organs to return to their pre-pregnancy position

Warming Paste
Alongside belly binding you can double up and use a warming past postpartum to get you feeling good. The point of the warming paste is that it will physically warm up your abdominal area to help with the following: Increase blood flow to the area to help aid in muscle recover | Help with toning | Aid in tightening of loose skin | Help rid of water retention that the body holds onto post baby
